The National Examination Council (NECO) has released the result of the June/July examination that was held last year in every state in Nigeria. According to NECO, Ogun State came first and Oyo second. This result put Oyo State on the front burner again.
The Oyo State government in the past one year has committed a lot into the educational sector. Among the policies introduced are the cancellation of automatic promotion and the introduction of school Governing boards to direct the affairs of secondary schools in the state. These policies are already yielding positive results. While the state government should be commended for this feat, I want to remind the government not to relax in the efforts to turn around the fortunes of education in the state. It should ensure that the current feat is not a fluke.
I will also like to appeal to parents to always contribute their part by supporting the government and also pay their children developmental fee when due. I will like to also charge the recently inaugurated School governing boards to live up to expectations and discharge their responsibilities effectively.
If the government, parents, SGBs, teachers and all stakeholders continue to contribute their quota to the educational sector, Oyo state will attain its pacesetter status again and reclaim its glory as the intellectual capital of Nigeria.
