Oyo NUT appeals to government on salient education issues, cautions members against impostors

Published by

THE Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) Oyo State Wing, has cautioned its members, particularly, primary school teachers who are yet to receive their letters of promotion not to fall prey of impostors whose target is to extort money from them, saying these set of people lack the wherewithal to solicit for teachers on the issuance of promotion letters.

This was one of resolutions of the union at the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting held on Thursday, 17 March, 2022 and contained in a communiqué made available to Nigerian Tribune and signed by the council’s chairman and secretary, Comrades F.A Shittu-Gbeko and N.M Adullahi, respectively.

According to NUT’s SWEC -in session, the move was as a result of intensive examination of some significant issues affecting the state’s education system; teachers’ welfare and the teaching profession.

While the council expressed appreciation to the governor of Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde, on his pragmatic approach at improving teachers’ welfare and standard of education in the state, it appealed for speedy approval of the newly computed State Universal Basic Education Board’s (SUBEB) financial implication occasioned by the evacuation directive on the six years promotion waiting period of primary school’s teachers on GL/13, so as to administratively effect the promotion of teachers going to SGL14 and above.

This was just as it asked for the release of the promotion letters of the affected teachers.

The council also lamented the shortage of teachers which it attributed to retirement in the state primary sub-sector of the education system the noting also the unstable policy on the conduct of examination in primary schools needs to be addressed on time.

The SWEC also reechoed with great concern the non-release or irregular disbursement of the running cost to schools and the non-issuance of primary school leaving certificate to graduates of primary schools, asking the government to arrest the situation by way of enabling the concerned authorities and Ministry of Education to embark on the issuance of recognised certificate to pupils the affected pupils so as to guard against any negative issues in the future.

While calling on the government to offset in totality the 2021 leave grant of primary of school teachers and the request of the NUT state leadership on the career elongation of primary school graduate teachers to salary grade level 16, SWEC observed that this would further boost the morale of the affected teachers.

In order to combat juvenile delinquencies and students’ and other learners unrest in schools in the state, the council suggested that the government, as a matter of urgency, should constitute a committee of stakeholders in education, which will draw its membership from the relevant government ministries and parastatals; the state body of PTA, NUT, the community, security operatives, ANCOPSS and AOPSHON  as well as religious bodies to chart a new course.

Expressing gratitude tGovernor Seyi Makinde for his uncommon virtues as a leader, the council pledged its continued support to his commitment at taking education to greater heights in the state.
