Oyo NSCDC arrests 16 suspects for illegal mining, paint production

The Oyo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 16 suspects allegedly involved in crimes related to the illegal production of paints and the unlawful mining of tourmaline.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that five of the suspects were apprehended on February 26 at the Academy area of Iwo Road, Ibadan, following intelligence reports.

They were reportedly found producing paints without proper authorization, posing risks to unsuspecting consumers and legitimate businesses.

Parading the suspects, the State Commandant, Augustine Padonu, stated that the five individuals were not only engaged in the illegal production of paints but also used the brand names of registered paint manufacturers without obtaining the required license.

He further disclosed that 11 other suspects were arrested for illegal mining activities at Oyanlola River in Ologbojo Village, near Ayete, in the Ibarapa North Local Government Area.

According to the Commandant, the suspects were involved in the unauthorized extraction of tourmaline, a valuable mineral resource.

“Their actions not only violated existing mining regulations but also posed significant environmental and security concerns,” Commandant Padonu stated.

He reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to eradicating illegal activities that threaten public safety, economic stability, and environmental sustainability, warning that illegal mining and unauthorized manufacturing operations would not be tolerated in the state.

“The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps remains resolute in enforcing the law and protecting critical national assets.

“We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

“The law will take its full course against those who seek to undermine the legal frameworks governing these sectors,” the Commandant stated.

He also urged state residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information to help curb criminal activities.
