THE member representing Atiba state constituency in the Oyo Sate House of Assembly, Honourable Gbenga Oyekola, has parleyed members of his constituency on the state of rural roads in the area, highlighting the steps he would take to draw the attention of the state government to the condition of the roads.
Honourable Oyekola, while speaking during a town hall meeting at Efunlete village in Oyo town, said the condition of roads in the rural areas is making it difficult for farmers to transport their produce to urban areas for sale.
He said the state of the roads is making the cost of transportation of agricultural produce exorbitant, thereby eating into the profits of farmers.
“As your representative, my responsibility is to take the challenges you are facing to the executive arm of government, which is responsible for constructing and rehabilitating roads, and I am happy that this town hall meeting is holding where you are sharing the challenges you are facing,” Honourable Oyekola said.
He then said a committee would be set up to work towards ensuring that the rural roads are attended to by government.
Among the members of the committee to be set up alongside Honourable Oyekola are the federal honourable representing the constituency, the senator from the constituency, the local government chairman of Atiba, traditional rulers and other prominent people in the area.
Earlier, members of the constituency lamented what the terrible condition of rural roads is costing them, particularly with most of them being farmers.
One of the leaders in the constituency area, Mr Ibrahim Adejare, said trucks don’t even want to come to the farms when we harvest our produce and when they come, they charge us so much that we barely make any profit.”
At the meeting were representatives of the Justice Development and Peace (JDPs), Archdiocese of Ibadan and Diocese of Oyo, Dr Tony Oyedeji and Mr Dominic Taiwo.
