Oyo State government, on Friday, launched the green dot logo to promote family planning (FP) services and as a signifier of places individuals can access quality family planning services within the state.
Oyo State Commissioner, Dr Bashir Bello, launching the green dot log, in Ibadan, said the logo is the new branding for family planning and is to ensure individuals within the state can access FP services without any suspicion.
The event, an initiative of the Sustaining Programmes and Partnerships for Reproductive Health Transformation (SUPPoRT) initiative, in collaboration with the Oyo State Government and other partners is to officially kick off the green dot campaign to sensitise Nigerians on family planning and on where to access quality FP services in Oyo State.
SUPPoRT’s Technical Assistant consultant, Mrs Adesola Fanimokun, speaking at the launch said working with the State government, the green logo dot is to soon also signify well-equipped health facilities with well trained, motivated health provider that provides FP services.
Oyo State Health Educator, Mr Samuel Olarinde, in an overview of the green dot logo said years after the first National family planning campaign was launched, family planning methods use still stagnated at 17 per cent among married women age 15 to 49 years in Nigeria.

Mr Olarinde said Nigeria’s contraceptive usage rate became stagnated because most Nigerians do not know why and where to get family planning services, and thus the new FP logo for the ‘Green Dot’ campaign to sensitise Nigerians on FP and on where to access services all over the nation.
According to him, the old FP logo, which is the map of Nigeria with a mum and dad holding a baby is prone to misinterpretation, unlike the new green dot logo that is a symbol of unity.
He added: “in a diverse, multi-ethnic and religious society like Nigeria, logos are prone to misinterpretation. The ‘green dot’ logo as the name implies is a simple ‘green dot’. It is simple, abstract, easy to describe and recall. Its’ simple colour conceptually represents the diversity and oneness of Nigeria. The idea is that it takes all members of the family to take decisive steps in making sure that building a home is not a chore but a joy for everyone involved.”
Executive Secretary, Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr Muideen Olatunji, said the green dot logo was been domesticated in the state, urging the media and other stakeholders to help its promotion for the betterment of the health of women, children and the society at large.
