Oyo govt demolishes popular lounge in Ibadan

A popular lounge, Pythagoras Lounge, in Ibadan, Oyo State has been demolished by the state government.

The building, located at Felele in Ibadan was demolished by government officials on Monday.

The CEO of Pythagoras Lounge, Soji Adegbite, said he was only given notice of the demolition exercise last Friday.

According to him, the government said that the club was at a wrong location.

Adegbite described the demolition as unfair because he was just given two day’s notice before the exercise.

The CEO alleged that a proper demolishment notice was not brought to them by the government.

“The men sent by the government came on the 4th of October, 2024 saying the building was was at the wrong location on the street,” he told Nigerian Tribune.

He further claimed that it was an illegal action by the government because the notice was only bought in two days before the action.

Adegbite noted that there were other buildings located beside the main road like his own lounge that were still standing. He alleged that singling out his lounge gave the impression that his building was being targeted.

An official response from the Oyo State government was not available as of press time.

However, sources familiar with the matter say that the property may be blocking a major waterway, leading to flooding in the area.
