Oyo State House of Assembly Deputy Majority Leader, Honourable Olasunkanmi Babalola on Monday distributed tools worth millions of naira aimed at empowering the people of his constituency so as to be self-independent.
Some of the items include freezers, generating sets, grinding machines, gas burners with cylinders and cash among others.
Babalola, who represents Egbeda State Constituency said the gesture was in fulfilment of his campaign promises made to his constituent members.
Speaking at Urban Day Grammar School, Babalola said “What we are doing today is according to the responsibilities bestowed on me, which are to make laws, perform oversight functions and empower people in my constituency.
He encourages beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items received while warning them not sell the materials but use them and cater for their needs
“Nigeria is going through a lot right now so are her citizens and I am empowering my people. According to my campaign promises, I promised my people to empower them and this is part of my empowerment process.
“ I am giving back to my people who put me in this position, I’m not one who will forget his people after attaining a position.
“A good leader is geared at making his or her people happy and I’m glad my people are happy today. I want to appreciate Gov. Seyi Makinde for granting the Oyo State House of Assembly the approval to empower our constituency members.
“We’ve heard of instances in the past where beneficiaries sold items received. I want them to please use these items in making money steadily and cater for your needs and that of your family,” he said.
Speaking, one of the beneficiaries, Mrs Deborah Ojo, who received a sewing machine, said this was her first time of being a beneficiary of political empowerment even though she had been inactive politics in the state for over 20 years.
“People call me Iya PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) and I’m happy that today I’m truly benefiting from something to show off,” she said.
Also, Mrs Mariam Onikede, a generator beneficiary said that she was the happiest person among the beneficiaries as she least expected what she got.
“I’m very grateful to Honourable Babalola for this gesture and I charge him not to change his ways and continue to remember his people,” she said.
Meanwhile, Egbeda Local Government PDP Chairman, Mr Akin Alamu encouraged the beneficiaries to use the items given in order to be self-reliant and to improve their standard of living,” he said.
