Oyo community appeals to IGP over abandoned school project

The Odanbon community in the Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State has called for the intervention of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun over the long-abandoned Nigerian Police Force (NPF) secondary school project.

They also urged the Senator representing Oyo Central, Dr Yunus Akintunde, the House of Representatives member representing Ogo-Oluwa / Surulere Federal Constituency, Hon Ojo Sunday Makanjuola and the paramount ruler of Ogbomosoland, HIM Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege 111 SOUN of Ogbomosoland, to please follow up

This initiative was originally proposed in 2014 when the Olodanbon Royal Family, led by HRH Oba Gbadebo Adepoju Akintade 1, generously donated approximately 40 acres of land for the establishment of the school. The project was intended to honour the Late Chief Sunday Adewusi, the Asiwaju of Ogbomosho and the fifth indigenous Inspector General of Police.

In a letter signed by Prince Amos Akinade Adepoju and addressed to the IGP, the community expressed its concerns over the lack of progress on the school project, which has seen only the fencing of the land completed before being left to deteriorate. The letter highlights that the site has turned into a haven for wildlife rather than serving its intended educational purpose.

The community conveyed their congratulations to the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, on his recent appointment, expressing confidence in his ability to revitalise the police force and improve its public perception. They urged him to leverage his extensive experience to promote better relations between the police and the communities they serve.

The appeal underscores that it has been ten years since the land was handed over for the school’s construction and that the establishment of a secondary school in the area would benefit not only the residents of Oyo State but also those from neighbouring Kwara and Osun States. The Odanbon community believes that the school could significantly enhance educational opportunities and contribute to the local economy.

The letter further points out that Ogbomosho is in close proximity to various amenities and has numerous tourist attractions, including the historic Soun’s Palace and the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH). The establishment of an NPF secondary school would provide a conducive learning environment and stimulate development in the region.

In light of these concerns, the community is hopeful for the IGP’s intervention in reviving the abandoned project. They believe that his leadership and vision for a modern police force will lead to the development of the land donated by the Olodanbon Royal Family, ultimately benefiting the local community and contributing to the educational landscape of Oyo State.

The Odanbon community remains optimistic that the IGP will take action on this matter in the interest of promoting educational access and community development.
