Oyo begins distribution of five million treated nets

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, on Monday, flagged off the distribution of five million insecticide-treated bed nets across the state.

Upon Monday’s flag off, residents who have the net cards are to collect the treated nets from 2,500 distribution points spread across the 33 local government areas of the state.

Makinde, represented by Deputy Chief of Staff to the state governor, Mr Abdul-Mojeed Mogbonjubola, said the exercise will help the state reduce mortality among pregnant women and children under five years.

The Oyo governor said the distribution will go a long way in helping the state achieve the target of one net per two persons.

He assured of the commitment of his administration to reducing the burden of malaria in the state as well as ensuring universal health coverage in a cost-effective way.

Makinde also restated the commitment of his government to providing affordable, accessible, and qualitative healthcare in the state.

Speaking in the same vein, Special Adviser on Health to the Oyo Governor, Dr Funmi Salami assured of hitch-free distribution noting that the state had done a house-to-house sharing of the net cards.

In his remarks, the representative of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mr Mike Anojokwa said the Oyo state government was, by the launch of the treated net, joining the efforts of the federal government in continuously reducing the prevalence of under-five children and pregnant women dropping dead due to malaria.

Representatives of partners to include the World Health Organisation (WHO), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Hacey, assured of continued partnership with the state government on health initiatives.
