Oyo Assembly orders evacuation of destitutes at Ibadan flyover

Worried at the increasing number of destitutes around the Mokola flyover, Ibadan, the Oyo State House of Assembly has asked the state Ministry of Women Affairs, Social Welfare and Community Development to urgently evacuate all the destitutes around the flyover.

Deliberating on a motion by Honourable Wumi Oladeji of Ogbomoso North constituency, at Thursday’s plenary, the Assembly said the mandate was necessitated by the fact that the destitutes continued to constitute environmental nuisance, engage in social vices and destroy aesthetics that came with the construction of the flyover in 2013.

The motion adopted by the Honourable Debo Ogundoyin led Assembly, also noted the need for the state government to rehabilitate destitutes across the state.

Such rehabilitation, the Assembly noted, will enable the destitutes to realize their laden potentials thereby becoming more responsible residents of the state.

Also pointing to several accidents occurring around the bridge, the Assembly charged the state Ministry of Works and Transport to close up space at both ends of the terminals by extending the divider of the flyover.

By such extension, the Assembly noted that commuters and motorcyclists will be restricted to crossing to the other side of the road only at designated places.

Especially, the Assembly mandated the State Road Traffic Management Authority to detail its officers to enforce strict compliance to traffic rules and regulations around the Mokola flyover.
