Governor Seyi Makinde
I was thrilled beyond measure when I read recently in the papers that the Oyo State government led by Engr. Seyi Makinde is planning to set up a state anti-corruption agency.
That step is no doubt a well thought-out decision. For too long, Nigeria has been bogged down by corruption at all levels of governance and in all spheres of national life. From the universities to political parties, corruption thrives.
As a matter of fact, there are reports that some lecturers write long essays for students either for sexual gratification or for a fee. If this is not corruption, pray, what is it?

There’s another reason why I think the reported initiative by the Oyo State governor is a good one. Nigeria was conceived as a federation by its founding fathers but over the years, particularly as a result of military rule, almost every aspect of the national life has been centralized. It is in this regard that a state anti-graft agency is crucially important.
Besides, it was reported that Governor Makinde would be willing to waive his constitutional immunity if found complicit in acts of corruption. This is no doubt indicative of a desire to run a transparent and open government.
I think all men and women of goodwill should support Mr. Makinde in realizing his anti-corruption objectives.
