Oyo ANFE celebrates International Literacy Day

Members of the Oyo State Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education (ANFE), have joined other  stakeholders in the system across the state to celebrate this year’s   International Literacy Day as stipulated by  the United Nations Educational Scientific and  Cultural  Organisation  (UNESCO), in Ibadan.

Welcoming members of adult and non-formal education stakeholders in the state, in his office as part of activities marking this year’s Literacy Day in the state, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology Professor Dahud Kehinde Shangodoyin, reiterated that the people of Oyo State would henceforth enjoy better educational services  at all levels.

According to him, the educational agenda of the present administration under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde is backed up with fund that is good enough to kick-start result-oriented education reform in the state.

He said that the state government would ensure that teaching and learning processes become friendly to increase enrolment rate in  public schools and literacy centres in all the local government areas of the state.

While he urged the general public to support government’s vision for qualitative education development, he assured learners in all the non-formal education centres in the state of the government’s full support for empowerment and self-sufficiency.

Also speaking in the same vein at the occasion, the acting executive secretary, Agency for Adult and Non-Formal Education, Mr M.F Okunola, declared that the agency is committed to providing easy   access to literacy education and skill development with no cost.

While he appealed to learners in all the literacy learning centres in the state to complete their programmes, he encouraged them to invite others for the programmes.

According to Okunola, literacy is essential for human development, and is useful for effective participation in politics, social interaction and business engagement.

President, Matan Arewa, South-West Nigeria, Hajia Aisha Ismail, one of the major stakeholders in literacy awareness in Hausa community in Oyo State, lauded the Oyo State government for its efforts in literacy education development, and for extending the programme to the Hausa community.

He appealed to the state government to empower graduates of literacy centres, either with soft loan or employment, stating that “the development will go a long way to enhance  the achievement of some of the Sustainable Development Goals  in the state.”

Tribune Education gathered that the aspiration for literacy education among the artisans in the state has increased drastically, and there are calls for more efforts to be put in place to meet the demands through provision of learning incentives.
