No fewer than 60 people have been hospitalized following an outbreak of cholera in some communities in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the outbreak of the disease was first noticed in Ngyang, Kwalmiya, Banak, and Bakin Kogi before spreading to Dengi, the headquarters of the local government.

The Executive Chairman of the council, Ayuba Salihu Musa, confirmed the outbreak through his media team headed by Mazadu Ali on Tuesday.

He revealed that more than 60 persons have been hospitalized and are currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Primary Health Centres in Dengi, and other private hospitals within the local government.

“In response to the alarming reports of the outbreak, Kanam Local Government Council has taken decisive steps to mitigate the cholera outbreak.

“Medical supplies and equipment have been rapidly distributed to key healthcare facilities, including the General Hospital and the Primary Health Care Centre in Dengi,” the council chairman said.

“Additionally, the local government has graciously offset the medical bills for all patients receiving treatment, regardless of whether they are admitted to public or private hospitals, ensuring that worried families are not burdened by unexpected healthcare expenses during this challenging time.

“The local government is also undertaking an extensive public health campaign across the streets of Dengi.

“The aim is to educate residents on preventive measures to reduce the risk of cholera transmission.

“This initiative includes interactive sessions to raise awareness about proper sanitation practices and the importance of safe drinking water,” the media assistant to the LG chairman added.

Efforts to reach the State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Cletus Bako Shurkuk, proved unsuccessful as he could not be reached on his mobile phone.
