Mothers have been advised to pay adequate attention to their pre-term babies.
The advice was given by the Head of Pediatrics, General Hospital, Isolo, Lagos, Dr. (Mrs.) Funmi Showunmi at this year’s World Premature Day Celebration themed ‘Zero Separation, Act Now’ held at the hospital facility in Lagos.
In her speech at the event, she admitted that it is very stressful to take care of preterm babies while also expressing joy about the fact that preterm babies at General Hospitals are successfully treated and discharged.
Showunmi who was represented by Dr Renner Ayodele observed that the roles of mothers in taking care of pre-terms is very crucial, while also calling on members of the family including the father to play supportive roles in assisting the mothers.
A cross-section of mothers who spoke at the event thanked the State medical team for their encouragement and support while their babies were in the incubators.
A preterm mother, Mrs Grace Ajibade had a triplet with each of them weighing 1.5, 1.8 and 1.9 respectively.
She shared her experience, “I cried when I saw my babies but nurses encouraged and reassured me that my babies would be fine. And after 13 days, my babies were discharged. As at the last time I checked, their weights had increased.
They weigh between 7.2kg and 7.9kg.”
Another mother, Mrs Nwosu Amaka said, “I couldn’t look at my baby when I gave birth to her because it was very tiny. I had to stay for almost two months in the hospital. The encouragement I got from the nurses gave me strength. My baby, who is seven months old now weighs 7.2 kg.”
For this year’s celebration, over 300 mothers of preterm babies joined their counterparts across the world.
The celebration featured a drama presentation; a practical session on how to take care of preterm babies which were anchored by Assistant Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs Arubayi Olaide and Director Service Charter, Dr. (Mrs.) Tolulope Olatunji handled interactive sessions with mothers while gifts were presented to babies by Fidson Healthcare PLC.
