Over 250 criminals have been convicted in one year ― Ondo Amotekun

Published by

Ondo State Command of the Western Nigeria Security Network Agency codenamed Amotekun, on Monday said no fewer than 500 suspected criminals have been prosecuted at the law courts while over 250 had been sentenced to various Correctional Centres in the state.

The Commander of the security outfit in the state, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this during the visit of security personnel from the Natonal Defence College (NDC) Course 30 led by Commodore Olusegun Soyemi to his office in Akure, the state capital.

Adeleye said the criminals were arrested at various point across the state during “Operation Clean up” in the state in the last 12 months, saying the security outfit will commence the fourth phase of the Operation Clean up next week.

“As we talk now, we have over 250 in various correctional centers and as we commence operation clean up in the state, the best any criminal can do is to leave Ondo State.

“We started the Operation Clean Up at the state capital and combed all the black spots and made over 500 arrests before we headed to the local government areas and concentrated on the Northern Senatorial District where we embarked on 24 hours patrol.

“Substantially, we were also able to drive out the bad guys in recent times. You will find out that most of the kidnap cases you get nowadays are at the border.

“We have put out searchlight and we have mapped out security strategies to checkmate the activities of those bad people. We engaged the services of local hunters and vigilantee to join our men and patrol the forest.

Speaking on the preparation for the yuletide to ensure a crime-free environment, Adeleye said the fourth phase of the Operation Clean up will commence on November 8, 2021, and said Amotekun would make the state uncomfortable for criminals and make it crime-free.

“We are getting ready for a massive onslaught against criminals, particularly in the four local governments in Akoko such that once we finish our clearance operation, there will be no criminal activities like before. You know there is no society that is crime-free.

“Ose local government area has a boundary with Edo and Kogi states and it offers easy access way out. But we are checking them.

He, however, said the Ondo Amotekun has established synergy with neighboring states to flush out criminals from the region

“Amotekun in the South West is one and our style of operation is about the same but it is clear that Ondo State is a no-go area for criminals and we will not relent. All we have told our colleagues in other states is to also replicate what we are doing in Ondo State.

“We have initiated a joint patrol of major highways between Ondo and Osun, then Ondo and Ekiti states, and when they have security challenges they consult us.”

Speaking on the visit of the Security personnel, he said “their visit is that of a training capacity for security officers in the country, they have come on a visit to Ondo State to look at the security situation and a case study of what can be done to improve on the security situation of the state.

“Ondo State is gradually becoming one of the safest states in the country despite the insecurity in the country and this must have been one of the considerations to choose Ondo state as one of those states to visit.”
