The Rotary Club of Abeokuta Prestige (District 9111, Nigeria), in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Whitburn (D1320, Scotland) has distributed free reusable sanitary pads to over 200 secondary schools in Ogun State.
The distribution was done under the RedSafe Project of Rotary.
The event is also designed to empower girls through Menstrual Health Education, Interactive workshops on menstrual health, hygiene, and breaking societal stigmas.
Speaking on the theme: “Empowering Girls with Knowledge and Confidence to Manage Periods Effectively,” the President of RC Abeokuta Prestige, Rtn. Olukunle Mayor Onaolapo, said the event aligns with Rotary’s commitment to improving health, education, and gender equity in the communities.
He appealed to all stakeholders to be united in empowering girls with the tools they need to thrive.
Onaolapo commended the President of Rotary Club of Whitburn, Alistar Marquis, for the collaboration in celebrating the Rotary’s Water sanitation and hygiene month.
In their separate lectures, the Programme Leader, Gender Initiative and Youth Development, Dr. P. Idowu and Dr. Motun Adeosun, admonished the girls to stop stigmatising against one another.
They urged the girls to be proud of themselves for going through their menstrual cycle, saying without their period they won’t move to womanhood.
The duo said the menstrual periods is a normal life for all girls, hence they must cherish and enjoy themselves by maintaining cleanliness.
They also urged them to always dispose off their used pads properly in order to avoid environmental pollution.
