Nigerian Breweries Plc has said that the N100 million seed capital injected into the Nigerian education system to support the development of the sector has really yielded (and still yielding) great results.
The managing director of the company, Mr Jordi Borrut Bel, gave this hint in his remarks last week at the handover ceremony of a block of eight classrooms and toilet facilities that the company refurbished at Eva Adelaja Girls Secondary Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos.
According to him, Nigerian Breweries believes that as a responsible corporate citizen, its interests in Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole go beyond the pursuit of business or profiteering, but to invest rightly in the education of the children in order to secure a bright future for the nation.
“That is exactly what we are doing through the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, as our corporate social investment on education with initial an capital of N100 million which by today has yielded tremendous results,” he said.
Represented at the event by the corporate communications manager of the company, Mr Patrick Olowokere, the managing director explained that the company chooses schools and students as well as teachers to support under the trust fund based on their pressing needs and improvement of the quality of education in the country.
He said the company strongly believes that the refurbished classrooms with new set of chairs, white boards, ceiling fans and toilet facilities as well as many textbooks donated will certainly enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the school and consequently result to overall development of education and the economy as a whole.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Lagos State, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, who was represented by the chief whip, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Oriola Gbolahan, commended the Nigerian Breweries for the gesture, describing it as good complementary roles to improve the standard of education in the state.
While enjoining the management of the school to ensure the facilities are put to good use and well-maintained, she urged other corporate organisations and individuals to also support the state government in providing right education and skills to the children.
Expressing the appreciation to Nigeria Breweries on behalf of the school with over 3,000 students’ population, the school Principal, Mrs Oluyinka Soyoye said the facilities would go a long way in the teachers and students performing their respective duties more effectively.
She said now that the school is blessed with the new modern facilities, the school would record 100 per cent (against the current 82.2 per cent) success in the next West African Senior School Certificate Examinations.
