‘Our experiences in our new schools’

Published by

Ali Azeez, 10 yrs old, JSS 1

SINCE I joined my new school, I have been leaving home with my elder brother.

I am happy to meet some of my friends in primary school in the junior secondary school. Almost everything about the junior secondary secondary school is different from primary school. The teachers are strict; we start assembly at a different time. There are more students in my class and we also have a break which is meant for all of us to pray. The prayer break is number three of our breaks every day. Every Friday, we engage in co-curriculam activities. We have clubs such as press, sports, jet, band and drama. In addition to these, I do not join the school bus anymore because we live close to school.

Now that I am in secondary school, I wake up much earlier than when I was in primary school in order not to get late to school. I made six new friends in my class and one of them is my best friend; His name is Ali Azeez. My school has a big compound and the environment is clean. My primary school was close to my house but now, my elder brother and I join commercial buses every morning from Amosun, Wakajaye to Idi-Ape of Ibadan. I was happy on the first day of my resumption when we boarded a bus because I felt a sense of maturity.

I have many experiences in my new school. I resume in school every day by 7:15 a.m instead of the usual 7:30 a.m. Unlike what operates in my former school where our books were kept on our desks in the class, I now take my books home. In class, I write whatever is written on the board fast because there is no time to waste. We observe break three times before the closing hour but in primary  school there were only snacks and food breaks. Mum doesn’t take me to school anymore because my new school is not too far from home like my siblings’ but she has made an arrangement with a tricycle (Keke Marwa) driver to take me to and from school every day. I used to feel lonely because I am the only passenger he carries.  I like our school uniform.

I felt very excited when I was admitted to my new school. On my first day in school, I was surprised when a bell was rung by the time-keeper to inform us that a period was over. It was not like that in my former school. Another difference I observed is that we do not go out of our classes to play during break. I have a new friend named Opeyemi Macaulay. I wake earlier than before so as not to be late and punished. We do a lot of new subjects such as Business Studies and Basic Technology. My best subject is Mathematics.

My experience as a secondary school student is different from that of primary school. I observed that there are distractions in a college such as bad groups but I made new friends from JSS 2 to SSS 3 from whom I would gain knowledge of how to do things as a new student. I sacrifice 30 minutes sleep every day of the week to avoid lateness to school. I like my English teacher because she takes time to teach us.
