A woman, Jokotola, has told Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State that she was no longer interested in her marriage to her husband, Alao, whom she accused of irresponsibility and constant battery.
Jokotola told the court that Alao stopped providing for the family, and added that he always descended on her with punches anytime she urged him to be alive to his responsibilities in the home.
According to her, their children were not spared of his ruthless dealing with them.
The plaintiff begged the court to grant her custody of their children while it made her husband responsible for their welfare.
Alao refused to come to court despite being served court summonses.
Jokotola in her testimony said: “I am tired of living with my husband. He would snuff life out of me if I do not leave him, and our children will suffer.
“My husband and I had our Islamic wedding, but he did not pay my bride price. He displayed irresponsibility from the outset of our marriage.
“He shelved his responsibility as the breadwinner and left me to work from dawn to dusk in order that I might make up for his lapses in the home.
“He punched me any time I complained about his inadequacy. Even our children are not spared of this maltreatment.
“He transferred aggression to them, which resulted in our children going into hiding any time he was at home.
“My husband easily gets provoked and would behave irrationally when in this state. He would seize my things and collect back whatever he gave me when he was in this mood.
“My lord, it is difficult living with my husband. I do not enjoy peace of mind staying married to him. I plead that the court rules that we go our different ways.”
“I beg that our children’s custody be awarded to me, and my husband be made to look after their welfare.”
The president of the court, Mrs S.M Akintayo, adjourned the case and ordered a fresh hearing notice to be issued and served the defendant.
