Mr Rauf Aregbesola
THE Osun Government says it has achieved tremendous improvement in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in the last seven years due to deliberate and purposeful intervention in the education sector.
Mr Wasiu Omotunde-Young, the State Commissioner for Education, said this at a press conference in Osogbo.
The commissioner said that the performance of students in public schools in the state improved from 15.68 per cent in 2010 to 44.59 per cent in 2017.
He said in 2010, a total number of 43, 216 public secondary school students sat for SSCE while only 677 passed with credit in mathematics and English language, representing 15.68 per cent.
The commissioner said in 2017, a total number of 32,488 public secondary school students sat for SSCE with 14,487 passing with credit in Mathematics and English language, representing 44.59 per cent.

Omotunde-Young said the improvement in the students’ performance was a result of the focused, deliberate and purposeful intervention of Gov. Rauf Aregbesola in the education sector.
“As at November 2010 when Aregbesola retrieved his mandate to govern the state, the situation in the education sector was marked by poor, dysfunctional as well as appalling learning and teaching infrastructure across the state.
“These challenges resulted in the very poor performance of students in internal and external examinations,” he said.
Omotunde-Young said a blueprint, which was developed from education summit organised in 2011, resulted in radical and comprehensive policies which transformed the sector.
He said the government’s intervention in infrastructure development, training and capacity development of teachers as well as supply of science laboratory materials assisted in the improvement of students’ performance in examinations.
