Osun workers protests delayed implementation of N30,000 minimum wage

Published by

IN line with the directive of the national body of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Osun State civil servants on Tuesday embarked on protest to denounce the delayed implementation of the new minimum wage of N30,000 for public workers in the country.

The protesters around 10.15am marched through major streets in Osogbo, Osun state capital in large number in protest and demanded immediate implementation of the new wage.

Addressing journalists during the protest, the chairman of the NLC in the state, Comrade Jacob Adekomi said the government should commence the immediate implementation of the new wage.

He maintained that the new wage should have been implemented since the year 2016, noting that workers only persevered and adopted a friendly approach to resolving the crisis.

He contended that the resources available to the government were adequate to pay workers, pointing out that governors in the habit of squandering public resources should desist from doing so.

In his remarks, the chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Osun, Comrade Adekola Adebowale said the agreement reached by the tripartite committee set up by all parties involved in the negotiation should be respected.

He affirmed that labour movement will not return to the negotiation table with the government, saying they should begin implementation of the new wage without further delay.

“The tripartite commission put in place to negotiate with Labour had 6 governors and we deliberated and agree on N30,000. They cannot go back on that agreement. We won’t negotiate with them,” Adekola stated.
