OSUN State government has ordered that all abandoned vehicles on its roads across the state be removed immediately.
This was the outcome of the State Executive Council presided over by Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Wednesday at the executive chambers, located within Bola Ige house in the state secretariat.
According to a statement issued by the media adviser to the governor, Mr Sola Fasure Adviser to the Governor, Mr Sola Fasure, which was made available to the Nigerian Tribune on Thursday, “it has now become an offence for vehicles to be parked indiscriminately or abandoned on any of Osun road.
The statement reads “Council held that Osun Council has directed the Ministry of works to remove all such vehicles and keep the roads free, adding that owners of such vehicles would pay fine to collect them back. The government came up with the decision having viewed that such vehicles constitute grave security risk for it can be used for criminal purposes.”
The statement quoted in part, “At the end of the meeting of the Executive Council of Osun State condemned indiscriminate parking and abandonment of vehicles on the roads across the state, especially in the cities. These have grave security implications. The first is that abandoned vehicles could be used for criminal purposes. Also, abandoned vehicles could and often cause road accidents.”
“Therefore residents whose vehicles are parked on the roads are enjoined to remove them forthwith. Council directed the Ministry of Works to remove all such vehicles and keep the roads free. Owners of such vehicles would pay fine to collect them back.”
On Osun State Assets Management Bill, 2017, Council debates exhaustively on the draft bill, stating that the bill will give legal teeth to the State of Osun Assets Management Agency (OSAMA) that was established in February 2017. Council stressed that the agency would hold records of all government assets; manage them effectively for optimal performance and longevity.
