Osun State House of Assembly on Monday confirmed caretaker nominees for local governments, local council development areas and area councils in the state.
The motion for the confirmation was moved by the Majority Leader of the assembly, Honourable Moroof Olanrewaju and seconded by Honourable Babatunde Komolafe, representing Atakumosa East and West, at the plenary in Osogbo.
Speaker of the Assembly, Honourable Timothy Owoeye, had on July 1 at plenary, read out names of nominees submitted by Governor Gboyega Oyetola to run the affairs of local governments, LCDAs and area councils in the state
The Speaker, while affirming the confirmation of the nominees, said the confirmed persons would be in charge of the 30 local government areas, 32 local government development areas and seven area councils in the state.
Owoeye said that the confirmation was in line with Section 3A, Sub-section 3 of the state Local Government Administration Amendment Bill 7 of 2021.
The speaker said the confirmation was also based on the request of the state governor.
Meanwhile, before the motion for confirmation was moved, the minority leader of the assembly, Honourable Kofoworola Adewunmi, raised an objection to the confirmation of the nominees.
Adewumi said his party was not in support of the confirmation of the nominees, adding that the members of the caretaker committees were not the choice of the masses.
In his response, the speaker said due to the series of unpleasant happenings in the country, it was not possible for local government election to be held in the state at the expiration of the tenure of the elected council administrators on February 5.
He also said that there was an extant law passed by assembly which allowed caretaker committee to be in charge of the local government areas for six months before the conduct of the election.
