Osun 2018: AD zones governorship ticket to Osun west senatorial district

Published by

AS preparations for the conduct of September 22 governorship poll in Osun gather momentum, the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the state, on Monday disclosed that the party’s gubernatorial ticket has been zoned to Osun West Senatorial District, saying development was part of the moves to facilitate electoral success for the party during the exercise.

This was contained in a statement signed by the chairman of the AD in Osun State, Barrister Olayinka Ojo, which was forwarded to the Tribune online in Osogbo

According to the release, “having taken a cursory look at the political configuration of Osun State since its creation through a military fiat in 1991, we have discovered that Osun West Senatorial District has been marginalised in the opportunity of producing governor for the state”.

It reads further, “since the civilian regime of Late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, a native of Ede and a welfarist politician of note, who was the first executive governor of Osun for only 22 months, Osun West has not produced a governor, while other senatorial districts, such as Osun Central and Osun East have had their fair share of occupying the governorship position.

“The outgoing Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the APC extraction, who would be completing his second term in office on the 10th of November 2018 as the governor of the state is from Ilesa, one of the towns, constituting Osun East Senatorial District.

From this preview, after due and wide consultations, the Alliance for Democracy at the national and state levels have resolved to zone the gubernatorial ticket of the party to Osun West Senatorial District”.

“We have begun a thorough preparation to ensure total victory for the party in the September 22, 2018 governorship election in the state, such that our electoral success during the exercise would be guaranteed.

Apart from the increase in our support base in all the 31 local government areas and Area Office in Modakeke and growing number of Osun people, most especially the electorate are anxious to vote massively for the AD in the crucial exercise”.

“We have held talks with staunch members of other major political parties, including the All Progressive Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The meeting of the executives of our party with some serving political appointees of the outgoing Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who have concluded plans to defect to the AD is fast yielding fruits, while we also extend our hands of fellowship to other members of political parties who want to team up with us to democratically take over the reins of government in Osun State”.

“Nonetheless, a free, fair and credible primary exercise would be conducted by the party’s leadership for all our aspirants on a fixed date which would be announced to the public in due course”, the release concluded.
