Ortom pledges donation of N20m to victims of fire incident in Gboko

BENUE State Governor, Samuel Ortom has pledged to donate N20m to the traders whose shops were razed down by the early hour’s fire at Gboko Main Market.

The governor also directed the Bureau of Internal Affairs in the state to ensure the establishment of fire service units in the major towns in the state.

Ortom made the pledge yesterday during the assessment tour of the burnt market.

The governor who sympathized with the traders said that the establishment of fire service was necessary to prevent further incidents in the future and advised the traders union to liaise with the local government council to sink boreholes around the market.

He assured the traders to carry out a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire incident and advised the traders to provide fire extinguisher in their shops as well as engaging experts to carry out electrification in the market.

Earlier, the council chairman, Mrs Becky Orpin thanked the governor for his prompt visit to the market to assess the damage caused by the inferno and appealed to the governor for the installation of fire service facilities at the market.

The chairman, Gboko Main Market Traders Association, Mathew Amacete told the governor that the fire was caused by electricity upsurge and appealed to the governor for assistance.
