The Ogun State Police Command arrested 20 people in connection with the Oro festival crisis in the Ikenne Remo area of the state on Saturday.
According to the Sunday Tribune, some youths in the town insisted on going ahead with the celebration despite a government ban.
Reports indicated that the youths blocked some major roads in the town, burning used tyres. This development led to a face-off between the youths and the men of the Nigeria Police Force, who had been on the ground to maintain peace and order.
When contacted, the State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed the incident.
Alamutu stated, “We are very much aware of the situation. It is a fallout of the longstanding obaship crisis in the town, and recently, the court dismissed the one currently on the throne, but the judgement had been appealed.
“So, based on the tense atmosphere, the local government, which is the consenting authority for the festival, said that it should not be celebrated so that it won’t lead to any breach of peace. We did the same thing last year, but some misguided youths decided they must have their way.
“We have arrested 20 of them, impounded two vehicles, and everyone will soon be brought to the state command at Eleweran, Abeokuta, to answer for their misdeeds.”
