Original design of Abuja train station without escalator faulty — FG

The Honourable Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, has criticized the original design of the Kubwa Train Station in Abuja, noting that without an escalator, it is very difficult for individuals with disabilities and the elderly to access train services.

In a statement he personally signed on Tuesday, the Minister said he has directed the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to re-evaluate the station’s design, focusing on incorporating an escalator for the convenience of the elderly and people with disabilities.

According to the Minister, “Yesterday, I led a team from the Ministry of Transportation on an impromptu inspection of the Kubwa train station to assess the level of service being provided to the Nigerian public.

This followed a report of vandalism of assets belonging to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), which supplies power to the Kubwa train station. This act has forced the station to rely on alternative power sources, leading to a decrease in efficiency.

“During this inspection, I also identified that the original design of the station did not include an escalator to accommodate individuals with disabilities and the elderly.

This lack of accessibility has resulted in difficulties for these groups, as they are forced to use the staircase intended for all passengers.

“In line with our commitment to improving the transportation sector in Nigeria, I have tasked the management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation to re-evaluate the station’s design with a focus on incorporating an escalator for the convenience of the elderly and people with disabilities.

“Furthermore, I have instructed a team from both the ministry and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to collaborate with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to expedite the restoration of power from the national grid.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the efficiency of our operations, we have implemented a rapid response system to address any issues that may arise.

This proactive approach will help us deliver the high-quality service that the Nigerian people deserve, making their transportation experience seamless and hassle-free.

“It is our collective responsibility as public servants to uphold the principles of accountability and excellence in our work. By striving for optimal efficiency in our respective roles, we contribute to the realization of the Renewed Hope Agenda set forth by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
