Organised Labour condemns Rivers emergency rule, threatens action

Organised Labour has opposed the declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State, warning that it may take action that could disrupt the economy if the decision is not reversed soon.

In a joint statement, Rivers State leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) described the move as unconstitutional and harmful.

They argued that suspending the governor, Similanayi Fubara; his deputy governor, and members of the Rivers Assembly undermines democracy, stating that these officials were elected by the people.

The unions also raised concerns about the economic impact, noting that local government workers have yet to receive their salaries due to the crisis.

With the rising cost of living, they warned that this would worsen hardship for workers and their families.

Labour leaders emphasised that Rivers State is vital to Nigeria’s economy, especially in the Niger Delta.

The organised Labour also cautioned that political instability in the state could worsen inflation, currency devaluation, and unemployment, while also driving away investors and harming economic growth.

While acknowledging the need for law and order, they insisted that government actions must follow the constitution.

They unions, however, called on the President, National Assembly, and the Judiciary to reverse the emergency rule and reinstate suspended officials.

The unions also urged the federal government to engage in dialogue to resolve the situation peacefully.

The labour unions however warned that they may take action that could impact national economic activities if their demands are not attended to.
