Over 200 students of dispensing ophthalmology have been inducted as newly qualified opticians by the Registrar of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN).
The oath-taking and induction ceremonies were held for students from the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa; the Millennium College of Health Technology, Akure, Ondo State; and the Ekiti State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Ijero Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Conducting the oath-taking and induction ceremony, Dr. Obinna Edwin Awiaka, Registrar of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria, warned the inductees against quackery, stating that it attracts a jail term.
Dr. Awiaka emphasised that dispensing optics is a well-recognised profession in Nigeria and urged the students to take their rightful place in healthcare optics.
Also speaking, the National President of the Association of Dispensing Opticians, Optician Obote Ogenerho, admonished the inductees to maintain the highest standards of ethics in their profession and association.
Ogenerho pledged the association’s commitment to supporting them throughout their careers, urging them to take advantage of the association’s benefits to contribute to their community.
In his speech, the Provost of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa, Alhaji Jimoh Ibrahim, reminded the inductees that the field of opticianry is not just a career but a noble service to humanity.
He said that the inductees have been equipped with the knowledge and skills to excel, urging them to make a difference in the lives of those they serve.
Also, the head of department, Optician Ibrahim Liman Moshood, said that opticianry is one of the four cores of the eye care services, where they are saddled with the responsibility of aiding vision by the production of eyeglasses to treat fabricated errors.
He said the people form a fundamental part of the eye care team, which the Kwara state government needed to integrate into the workforce to reduce the burden of visual impairment and blindness.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to the best graduating students from the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa, the Millennium College of Health Technology, Akure, and the Ekiti State College of Health Sciences and Technology, Ijero Ekiti.
