Ooni of ife reacts to Ibadan funfair tragedy organised by ex-wife

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has reacted to the tragic funfair incident in Ibadan, which claimed the lives of at least 35 people, many of them children.

The event, held at the Islamic High School, Basorun, was organized by the Wings Foundation, led by the Ooni’s ex-wife, Naomi Silekunola.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Oba Ogunwusi expressed his condolences to the Oyo State Government and the families of the victims. He also pledged support for efforts to bring healing to those affected by the tragedy.

“We share in the grief and pain of the affected families. We pray that Olodumare grants them the fortitude to bear this trying time,” the statement read.

The monarch also praised his ex-wife for her past charitable efforts, stating that she had demonstrated genuine care for children by organizing similar events in Osun State when she was queen.

The Ooni’s statement further called for immediate action to prevent such incidents in the future, urging stricter adherence to safety standards and child welfare policies.

The statement read, “We share in the grief and pain that has engulfed the affected families. We pray that Olodumare grants them the fortitude to bear this trying time.

“During her time as queen, Miss Naomi Silekunola Ogunseyi demonstrated love and care for the children of Ile-Ife, organizing events each December to support indigent children.

“The House of Oduduwa pledges to support all efforts to bring solace and healing to those affected by this devastating loss. We also call for immediate action to prevent such incidents in the future, stressing the importance of rigorous adherence to safety standards and child welfare policies in educational institutions.”

He however condemned the sensationalization of the incident, calling for a responsible and reflective approach to reporting the tragedy.

The Ooni concluded by encouraging unity among all stakeholders,government, the media, and the public to foster a culture of care, respect, and accountability.
