Ooni of Ife
The executive director of Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding (CBCIU), Osogbo, Professor Siyan Oyeweso, on Friday said that prominent traditional rulers in the country would converge on Osogbo, Osun State capital next Wednesday to brainstorm some on security challenges in Nigeria.
Addressing a press conference as part of the activities heralding the security summit, he said causes of insecurity and far reaching solutions aimed at addressing security challenges would be the fulcrum of the meeting.
Oyeweso, who also hinted that security experts would also attend the summit listed traditional rulers expected at the programme to include the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Sa’ad, among others.

According to him, “the quest for solutions to the insecurity problems plaguing Nigeria can only yield fruitful and positive results with the active involvement of traditional institutions because of its closeness to the people at the community level.”
“Some of the issues to be addressed at the summit include effective policing of highways, appraisal of the role of fuel attendants and night guards along the expressway, redesigning the security architecture of the South West and rethinking the place of community policing in managing security threats and challenges.”
“Other issues to be discussed include the role of landlords associations in intelligence gathering and security matters, farmers and herdsmen: the challenge of food security, traditional security mechanism in the face of modern security challenges”, Oyeweso remarked.
He, however, stated that CBCIU had lived up to expectation in its responsibility as a repository of African culture and traditions with archival materials on notable African thespians, including Late Duro Ladipo.
