Onnoghen: NBA summons emergency NEC meeting, to hold rally in protest

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) will today, Monday, hold an emergency meeting of its National Executive Committee (NEC) on the purported suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) by President Muhammad Buhari.

The President had, on Friday, announces the suspension of Onnoghen, who is facing an assets declaration charge before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) and immediately sworn in Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad as acting CJN.

The general secretary of the NBA, Jonathan Gunu Taidi, said in a notice of meeting cited by Tribune Online that the meeting has Onnoghen’s suspension as the only agenda and it will be attended only by statutory NEC members only.

Mobilisation to the Nigeria Bar Association headquarters for a meeting on Monday January 28, 2019, to demand the shut down of the courts and pulling out of lawyers until the ongoing “judicial coup” is quashed.

Tribune Online also gathered that there will a rally against the ongoing assault on the Nation’s Judiciary same day at NBA headquarters in Abuja.

Lawyers in Defense of Democracy, Civil Society apex Body and National Interest Defenders. lovers of democracy and rule of law, Lawyers, Activists, Civil Society groups, ethnic and religious groups, media, youth and student’s groups are enjoined to participate in the rally to save the nation’s democracy.

The rally will take off from the NBA headquarters where Nigerians are going to be demanding for one thing from the Nigerian lawyers leadership which is to show leadership by pulling lawyers out the courts and keep striking until the President stops his factional CJN from parading and officially recognise the current CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen.
