Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, and his convoy, at Otulu before the attack.
ONE person was killed while two vehicles were burnt when the convoy of the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku community in Delta State, Ifechukwude Okonjo II, a brother of former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was attacked by some irate youths at Otulu satellite town, on Friday.
Several vehicles were allegedly destroyed in the confusion, even as the royal father and some of his chiefs narrowly escaped death.
Sunday Tribune gathered that the traditional ruler had led members of his ObiIn-Council and community leaders to the satellite town to perform certain traditional rites meant to usher in peace and tranquility.
It was gathered that some youths of Otulu, who recently embarked on protest, calling on relevant authorities to grant autonomy to the satellite town, made bonfires to block the traditional ruler’s convoy shortly after he had performed the rites.
All entreaties by the Obi’s younger brother, Prince Onyema Okonjo and security agents to let the obi pass were rebuffed by the youths.
Sunday Tribune further gathered that one of the irate youths was hit by a stray bullet from a security agent, who attempted to disarm him.
This was said to have incensed the youths who vented their spleen on vehicles and the entourage.
Confirming the report, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, said that the traditional ruler went to perform some rites and in the process, a fence fell, causing the youths to go violent.
He added that two vehicles were burnt, while the youth who was hit by a stray bullet later died.
Meanwhile, the traditional ruler has affirmed that Otulu remains a part and parcel of Ogwashi-Uku kingdom, emphasising that the agitation by a few to carve out Otulu from Ogwashi-Uku as an autonomous community remains unacceptable.
