AT least one person was killed with several others injured when some youth suspected to be members of rival cultists clashed in Ijapo area of Akure, Ondo state capital,  on Tuesday afternoon.
It was gathered that many residents of the area and passerby ran for their lives when the cultists engaged themselves in a fierce shootout.

According to a source within the area,  the cause of the clash was unknown but the young men started shooting and running across the estate while one man was caught down and others with gunshot escaped from the scene of the incident.

He explained that it took over two hours before men of the state police command curtailed the incident but said the identity of the cult group behind the shootout was still unknown as at the time of writing this report.

The eyewitness said, ” We were just hearing gunshots everywhere when they (cultists) started the fight. Everybody had to run for safety, some people ran to the Ijapo Police Station for fear of stray bullets.

” One person among them was seen on the ground after he had been hit with the bullets.”

It was learnt that a team of policemen from Ijapo Police Station deployed some of the men from the state command to the area to restore normalcy.

Confirming the incident,  the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Femi Joseph, said at least eight of the suspected cultists had been arrested while investigation had commenced into the matter.

He said, “We have arrested eight of them but I can tell you that we have not received any report that anybody was killed in the clash but our men are already on ground at the area to calm the situation. We have also commenced an investigation.”
