One fatally injured as rival cults clash in Warri

Published by

One person was fatally injured on Friday afternoon during a fierce clash between two rival cults at popular Igbudu Market harbouring Hausa Quarters in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident created pandemonium as residents and traders ran for their dear lives amid gunshots from different directions.

An initial report had it that a life was lost during the clash and that it took the intervention of men of the Nigerian Army to restore normalcy to the area.

When the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Delta Police Command, Asaba, DSP Bright Edafe, was contacted for confirmation, he said that he was yet to be briefed on the incident.

However, the traditional representative of the Ovie of Agbarha Warri of Otovwodo (Agbassa) Community Warri, Chief Julius Edafiadjebre, confirmed the incident in a chat.

He said that during the clash, an innocent resident of the area was fatally injured in Igbudu Unit 11 Community where he is the chairman.

Edafiadjebre disclosed that the injured person was receiving treatment in an undisclosed private clinic in Warri.

He lamented that the menace of cultists had given the area a bad name and also made it unsafe for law-abiding residents.

The Agbarha-Warri chief also clarified that the ongoing clash of the hoodlums was not between indigenes of the area and Arewa people, but simply between “between rival cult groups.”

Edafiadjebre said it was wrong for anybody to insinuate that the clash was between natives of the area and the Arewa people.
