One dies, houses destroyed after rainstorm in Ondo

One person was confirmed dead while several houses were destroyed after a torrential rainfall in Ikare-Akoko in Akoko Northeast Local Government Area of Ondo State on Sunday evening.

The victim, a popular butcher in the town identified as Ayepareti, was killed in the rain which lasted for about 40 minutes but rendered several people homeless.

A community leader, Ibrahim Kilani, who confirmed the incident said the victim was hiding in a house around Okela area when the building collapsed on him.

Kilani said the butcher was rescued by the residents of the area and was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.

He said the rain started around 7 pm and destroyed many houses in some areas which include, Ilepa, Okela, and part of Okoja in the town.

The Chairman of Ikare-Akoko Elders Forum, Elder James Oladetohun sympathized with the victims of the wreak and called on the state and federal government to come to their aid.

He noted the high cost of building materials, saying this may make it difficult for many victims to renovate their buildings on time.

One of the victims, Akeem Alabi said that all his belongings were destroyed, and solicited government assistance in order to rebuild the house, saying “my hope of rebuilding this house is very slim without government assistance”.
