Only one case of Meningitis in Gombe ―Commissioner

Gombe state commissioner for Health, Dr Ishaya Kennedy has debunked the insinuation that there is an outbreak of meningitis in the state saying only one case is being treated in the state specialist hospital.

Speaking in an interview with the Saturday Tribune on Friday, the commissioner remarked that what they had was a case of an 11-year-old girl from Akko local government area of the state.

He confirmed that the little girl has been diagnosed with type c meningitis and she’s currently being treated at the state specialist hospital.

“I am happy to state that she has been responding to treatment. That’s to say her condition is stable and no there is no cause for alarm.”

Kennedy affirmed that, “We don’t have any case of outbreak. We have not reached that point and God’s willing we will not.”

According to him, “When the case of the outbreak was reported in some states, the state governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo graciously approved the sum of N10m for the state  Emergency Response Committee which I am heading, to ensure that we took preventive measures.

He said the committee has been moving round the emirates and working with the traditional rulers to sensitize their people about the need to sleep in an airy place.

“My appeal to every household is to ensure that they sleep with their windows open and avoid congestion. A situation where more than five people sleep in a room is bad.”

“We have so far covered 8 emirate councils out of the 14 emirate councils hopefully by Saturday, we will be able to cover more.”
