Ondo university students issue government ultimatum over resumption

THE leadership of the Students Union leader of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, has accused the State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu of playing politics with their future, threatening showdown if the state government failed to reopen the school within the next seven days.

The students frowned over the continued closure of the institution since last December, accusing the state government of scheming to increase the tuition fee.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the President of the Student Union, Olawale Ijanusi, noted that the students of the institution had wasted a whole semester at home because of the plans of the state government to increase the tuition

Ijanusi said, “We have waited endlessly just because the governor wants to increase the tuition fee, for how long shall we continue to stay at home wasting away.

“Today makes it 80 days that we have been made to sit at home since the 2016/2017 academic session ended. It is quite pathetic and sardonic that the government has been quite undisturbed by this disheartening predicament.

The government has been so unperturbed by the fact that we are wallowing and wasting away at home.We have wasted a whole semester at home doing nothing.

“The hope of our Law students going to Law School is now hanging in the wind. We are made to go through all these unpalatable rigours all because of the unfortunate indecisiveness of the government.

The students however issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government and Governing Council of the institution the reopen the school, saying “failure of the government and the governing council to do the needful will draw the wrath of the Nigerian students.

“We have been silent enough. We will not allow the administration of the government to toy with our future. We have been pushed to the wall, and it is now highly sacrosanct, germane and imperative to take our destiny into our hands.”

The Chairman of the institution governing council, Mr Tunji Abayomi said the institution would meet up with the ultimatum and assured that the date of resumption would be announced very soon.
