Ondo: NANS demands immediate release of detained young activists

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the remand of three young activists at the Olokuta Correctional Centre in Ondo, describing it as a threat to civil liberties and freedom of expression.

In a statement signed by NANS National President Olushola Oladoja, NANS described the remand of young Nigerians as a means of trampling their rights.

The statement further added that the remand of the young Nigerians is a threat to the civil liberty of citizens of the country.

Adding that the arrest of the young activist is a direct assault on the freedom of expression.

However, the student association demanded the release of the young activists.

“The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), under the Presidency of Olushola Oladoja, express deep shock and strong condemnation over the arrest and remand of 3 young Nigerians who have now been unjustly remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Facility in Ondo state.

“Moreover, we find it disturbing that rather than uphold the rule of law and protect the liberties of citizens, the Ondo state Ministry of Justice is weaponizing the office to persecute voices of dissent and student leaders. This action is unacceptable, condemnable, and a dangerous trend that threatens civil liberties and freedom of expression in Ondo State and Nigeria at large.

“The implications of this oppression, send a dangerous signal to the public that the law is a tool for oppression, not justice.

“The continued detention of activists is a direct assault on the freedom of expression and assembly, both of which are constitutionally guaranteed.

“We however call on the state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa to take action on this issue, while we also urge him to call on the state Attorney General Kayode Ajulo , to order and put an immediate stop to the remand of the young Nigerians.

“The state government should also reaffirm the Ondo State’s commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens, including students, to engage in peaceful protest and political expression.

“Failure to meet these demands within the next 72 hours will leave us with no choice but to commence a non-stop mass action against oppression in Ondo.

“This demand is not a threat; instead, it is a statement of intent backed by the collective resolve of Nigerian students nationwide. We will not sit idle while our comrades are being persecuted for demanding improved governance. An injury to one is an injury to all,” the statement read.
