Ondo to link coastal communities with roads

ONDO State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, on Wednesday, disclosed that his government has embarked on the construction of roads in the coastal communities to link Atijere with his Ilaje kinsmen of Ilaje Local Government Area in the state.

Mimiko, who stated this during the inauguration of the reconstructed Igbokoda- Ugbonla road, in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area, said the construction became imperative to integrate Atijere with the coastal community and to forestall future crisis with Ogun State over boundary issue.

“Atijere, as most of us know, was at one time the headquarters of Ilaje District Council. Unfortunately, there is no good road linking it with other communities of Ondo State. The only access to Atijire and its environs has been through the Ijebu Waterside of Ogun State.

“Government considered this unacceptable and therefore deemed it necessary to urgently integrate Atijere with her Ilaje kinsmen of Ilaje Local Government through the provision of good road network.”

He recalled that the only access road available to the people of the area was blocked by the people of Makun-Omi, preventing the people of Atijere to gain access to their homes.

“This was definitely an embarrassing situation that must be addressed and also to avoid, and or nip in the bud, possible boundary issues.

“Fortunately, the prospect of a large deposit of bitumen and other natural resources in this region has made this road all the more strategic to the development of our dear state.

“In this light, the contract for the construction of a road to link Atijere and its environs to Aboto in Ilaje Local Government was awarded.”

Speaking on the reconstructed of Igbokoda- Ugbonla road, the governor said the 34.62km was one of the significant achievements of his government in the southern senatorial district of the state.

The governor said that a total of N4.628 billion was expanded on the construction of the road while other road projects were also awarded in the area during the life of his administration.

He listed the roads to include 6.5km asphalt overlay of Ojuala-Ipoke road, 4.7km Ugbonla-Erunna road, 1.075km palace / hospital road in Igbobini among others.

Earlier, the chairman of OSOPADEC, Johnson Ogunyemi, said the inauguration of the road would go a long way to enhance economic development of the area and the living standard of the people.

The Amapetu of Mahin, Oba Lawrence Omowole, commended the governor for bringing smiles to the faces of the people of the area by fulfilling his promises on construction of roads in the area.
