Ondo govt proposes 33 new LGAs, sends bill to Assembly

Published by

Ondo state government, on Friday, said all plans to create 33 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) out of the existing 18 local councils in the state would soon be concluded.

The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. Bamidele Ademola-Olateju,  who disclosed this after the State Executive Council meeting, said the State Executive Council has approved the proposal at its weekly meeting on Thursday.

Ademola-Olateju explained that the enabling law had been sent to the State House of Assembly for enactment, saying the proposal, if passed, will make the local council areas in the state 51.

Also speaking, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Charles Titiloye, explained that the proposed new LCDAs will operate and perform the same functions as the existing 18 local governments in the state.

Titiloye said that they would have the same functions and operate side-by-side with the existing 18 LGAs in the state.

He said the approval followed the recommendation of the Committee on LCDAs set up by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. Lanke Odogiyan headed the committee.

He said, “The procedure for local government creation will not be complete without an enabling law.

“The Council received today the proposed Bill for establishing the 33 LCDA.

“The State Executive Council approved this proposed Bill and is to be sent to the State House of Assembly for enactment to give necessary legal backing.”

It will be recalled that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, in 2019, received recommendations for creating more local government areas to extend governance to the people.

The government, however, set up an 11-member committee headed by Mr Lanke Odogiyan to work out the modalities for creating a new LCDA.
