Ondo: Court orders remand of motorcyclist for alleged rape

The Chief Magistrate sitting in Akure, Ondo state capital, has ordered the remand of a 30- year -old commercial motorcycle operator in Akure, Ondo, Michael Olorunfemi, at Olokuta correctional centre over the alleged rape of his wife’s 17-year-old sister (name withheld).

Olorunfemi who was arraigned before the court was charged with a one-count charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with the young girl.

According to the Police prosecutor, Inspector Taiwo Oniyere, the defendant committed the offence in August 2024, at 10 pm, in the Onigaari area of Irese Road, Akure.

The Police prosecutor stated that the father of four, married to the sister of the victim,  unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the 17-year-old girl.

The offence, according to the charge read to the defendant, contravened Sections 357 and 358 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006.

The prosecutor prayed the court to remand the defendant to a correctional centre pending advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

In the statement of the police, which was read in court, the defendant confessed to committing the crime, and said, “I had sexual intercourse with the victim in the bush.

“The victim approached me to take her to her boyfriend’s house, and on our way, I stopped near a bush and raped her. I promised to give her money, which I did not. She then reported me to her mother, which led to my arrest,”

The Chief Magistrate Kolawole Aro, however, ordered that Olorunfemi should be remanded in Olokuta Correctional Centre.

He said the defendant should be kept in custody while the case file is transferred to the DPP for advice, and adjourned the case till October 31, 2024 for review.
