Crucial Moments

On the fake Lagos airport terrorist attack

AS the year 2019 general elections draw nearer, Nigeria’s political scene is getting more interesting and even more scary.

The atmosphere is becoming more charged with politicians vying for one position or the other engaging in dangerous antics to outsmart or run down their opponents all in the name of gaining superiority come 2019.

Amosun will lead my guber campaign says Dapo Abiodun

In achieving their political goals, many of the different gladiators have engaged in different dangerous trends capable of creating panic and subsequent national security breach.

In other words, many of the politicians in their desperate moves to realize their political dreams are not ready to consider the national interest as they are ever ready to use any  gimmick that comes their way as a political porn to achieve their aim.

Besides engaging in all manner of dangerous lies and promises to deceive the poor electorate just to win their votes, this class of politicians in their desperate bid to achieve their dreams have unfortunately found an alibi in the social media platform which happened to be one of the fastest means of disseminating genuine and questionable messages.

This brings to the fore the recent fake news planted in one of the social media platform insinuating of an alleged terrorist attack on the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

As expected, the alarm did not only throw confusion at the peaceful serenity hitherto enjoyed by the airport community but further negatively portrayed the entire country as an unsecured domain.

While the fake news created unnecessary tension among the various aviation agencies, the development became nauseating when it was discovered that the news was actually planted for mischievous reasons at a time when elections are around the corner.

As the news continued to spread like wild fire with different interested parties either out of patriotism or otherwise frantically making efforts to find out the authenticity of the news, many people have traced the news to the handiwork of some politicians trying to use the issue to create more tension in the country.

Some even attributed the news to the intrigues of the deadly Boko Haram sect to perhaps, test the preparedness of the aviation authorities in the face of any

attack coming from them.

The truth of the matter is that whoever is behind such fake news is not only an enemy of the country but one of those desperate and selfish few who are hell bent on achieving their selfish purposes at the expense of the generality of Nigerians.

While the source of the fake news has not been unraveled, if those behind such news were actually politicians, such action had only gone to show how desperate

they can be in railroading their way into public office at the expense of anything that comes their way.

What such politicians fail to realise is that it is only when there is peace and tranquility in the country that there can be elections or an opportunity for vying for positions.

That again brings to the fore the continuous politicisation of the country’s aviation sector by the political class at any given opportunity.

While it has not been concluded that those behind the fake terrorist attacks were politicians but from the past experiences Nigerian politicians have refused to detach sensitive areas like aviation from politics.

There is no doubt that the country’s aviation sector cannot afford to be an island and therefore, should be allowed to run in line with international standards devoid of any dirty politics.

As elections draw nearer, the political class should desist from dragging the aviation sector into politics as this has a way of sending wrong signals to the international community about the awkward ways things are done here.
