IN secondary school where I first had a glimpse of indecent dressing, we were made to believe that the major danger of dressing indecently is rape. And when I became an undergraduate, I and other people from my background still held on to that belief.
As ladies went from dressing half-naked to walking on our streets virtually naked, what has changed is the manner and rate at which rape is being perpetrated? Having carefully studied the matter, I realised that only one out of a 100 rape cases is as a result of indecent dressing.
I have lived for the past five years among students of institutions of higher learning and I have not heard of any rape attack on any of the half-naked individuals.
The question that begs for an answer is the reason for the prevalence of rape and what needs to be done to address the anomaly.
Flipping through the pages of our national dailies, we read about how men sexually abuse ladies, with the ladies being blamed for the way some of them dress.
Worse still, there are reported cases of fathers defiling their biological children, and of uncles and relatives raping and committing incest with very young members of their family.
Last year, 35-year-old Auwal Muhammad was arrested for defiling a 16-month-old baby while on admission at Usman Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto. A 47-year-old man was also arrested for defiling an 18 month-old baby in Kaduna.
Another one is that of a 31-year-old man who was arrested while sexually assaulting his two-year old daughter.
The most recent of these inhuman assaults on children is that of a 27-year-old man identified as Ibrahim, who was arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly defiling his 11-month-old niece, leaving the baby bleeding profusely.
This inhuman and anti-social behaviour has invalidated the belief that indecent dressing is the cause of rape. It shows that rape is perpetrated by people with eroded minds, or psychological unbalanced individuals.
As individuals, we need to be conscious of the mental state of the people around us and report any dangerous theatrics by anybody towards babies to the law enforcement agencies.
