On Kogi teachers

Published by

Food and shelter are very crucial to the survival of individuals in the society. Eating good food everyday and having shelter are some of the core necessities of life. Money also plays a vital role in the purchase of food and wellbeing of family members. In recent times, the Kogi State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) has complained about the death of many teachers in the state due to hunger and starvation following the non-payment of their salaries. It was reported that some of these teachers have not been paid their salaries for over 20 months. These are people who need to feed their families and send their children to school.

Now that this issue is really demoralising them, the question is: how do they feed themselves and their children? We need to take this seriously because apart neither parents nor their children should suffer from hunger.

If you are a teacher and also a parent and you are not paid, there is the probability that your children will begin to steal in order to meet their needs. Another concern is the issue of the payment of children’s school fees. Of course, it will be very difficult for parents in this category to pay school fees.

According to the (NUT) chairman, Comrade Ayodele Thomas , entreaties have been made to the state governor to look into the plight of teachers in the state. The governor should act now.
