Omonike Akinjide: Exit of a philanthropist

Published by

The news came in rather innocuously. One might have counted it as one of those irreverent rumours peddled about the great ones in our society. But in no time it spread and was later confirmed: Omonike Akinjide, a legal luminary and founder of Christianna Foundation, had slept in the Lord.
She was a renowned philanthropist with a kind heart who showed compassion through her foundation and gave hope to thousands of disadvantaged children through education.
She established Christianna Foundation which was a vehicle for tackling poverty in education in Nigeria. The foundation started its work by collecting and sending books donated by friends to some schools in Nigeria, a gesture from which 7,479 children have benefitted. The foundation provides stationery, school shoes and uniforms to children in 14 schools in Oyo, Ondo, Ogun and Lagos states.
It also provides desks and tables, make classrooms comfortable to learn in, builds and equips libraries in schools, provides visual and introduces learning initiatives to foster good teaching practices and pupil experiences.
The foundation also plans to establish and equip libraries in more states in Nigeria and continue to support existing beneficiary schools and introduce a scholarship scheme for girls at the point of departure from secondary school.
