Bauchi State government has ordered the immediate establishment of COVID-19 pandemic vaccination centres in places of worship, markets and tertiary institutions across the state.
The decision taken was sequel to the efforts by the state Government to discourage the spread of the new Omicron Virus before, during and after Christmas and New year celebrations considering that there will be an influx of people into the state during the Yuletide period.
The disclosure was made by the State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Task Force on Covid-19 and Lassa fever, Senator Baba Tela in continuation stakeholders meeting and consultation with relevant agencies held at the Government House.
Baba Tela said that the State Government will ensure strict compliance to non-pharmaceutical measures, protocols and public health advice noting that the approach which yielded positive results in the initial fight with Covid-19, is also applicable to Omicron Virus.
The Deputy Governor while calling for Imams, Pastors and Clerics to complement the government’s efforts through proper guidance of their followers advised those who are yet to receive first or second doses of the vaccine to urgently visit any nearest hospital to get vaccinated.
He restated the commitment of the government and the committee towards protecting the citizens from contracting any form of the disease and called for collaborative efforts in risk communication and sensitization of people, especially in rural areas.
Earlier, the Chairman of the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (BASPHCDA), Dr Rilwanu Muhammad who described Omicron as the virus of concern emphasized the need for adoption of Covid-19 safety measures in mitigating the effects.
While assuring the Agency’s continuous commitment to providing primary healthcare services, Dr Rilwanu Muhammad called for the support of the state government and donor agencies in that direction.
He assured that as soon as the Agency receives the consignment of vaccines from the NPHCDA, the vaccination exercise across the state will commence immediately urging the people who have taken the two jabs to come out for the booster jabs.
The meeting was attended by top government officials in the health sector, donor agencies, representatives of relevant departments and agencies, security agents, Community and religious leaders.
