Okowa calls for enlightenment of Nigerians about roles of legislators

DELTA State governor, Senator  Ifeanyi Okowa, has called for the enlightenment of Nigerians on the roles of the legislators to ensure that different organs of government carry out their functions without distractions.

Governor Okowa observed that most times, legislators are distracted from carrying out their functions of making laws due to demands from their constituents to engage in welfare programmes.

The governor made the call when members of Forum of Former Members of Delta State House of Assembly, led by Honourable Aneke Ifemeni, paid him a courtesy call in Asaba.

“Legislators are now distracted with most of them interested in welfare of their constituencies rather than making laws that will guide the government and the people,” the governor said, emphasising that, “with the distraction, the primary focus of a legislator is lost.”

While congratulating the former lawmakers for coming together as a body, Governor Okowa also, urged them to lend their voice as opinion leaders to issues affecting the state and the country.

He observed that as role models in the society, former law makers should also synergize with the elected legislators to ensure that the right things are done for the citizens by offering advice when necessary.

Governor Okowa, who used the occasion to list some of the achievements of his administration, commended the former lawmakers for partnering with  government to achieve desired results for the masses, stating that his administration would remain focused in delivering dividends of democracy to Deltans.

Earlier, Hon, Aneke Ifemeni had said that the forum which comprises former members of the Delta State House of Assembly from 1992 to date was happy with the developmental strides of Governor Okowa’s administration and urged the Governor to declare his interest for re-election as members of the forum who are in all the local government areas of the state will work to ensure his victory at the polls bearing in mind his result-oriented administrative prowess.
