Nigerians have been admonished to work hard to leave good legacies behind for the generations that would follow, for them to be shining examples.
This admonition was given by Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Joseph Toriola while speaking at the event held to mark the 40th anniversary of the death of the ex-member of Oyo State House of Assembly, who represented Oranmiyan North 1 Constituency between 1979 and 1983, Mr. Titus Odelola.
Odelola who passed on July 7, 1983, after suffering assault during a political campaign, contested the 1979 election on the platform of Unity Party of Nigeria and emerged victorious.
Speaking further at the event which also served as the 21st anniversary of the demise of the wife of the late lawmaker, Mrs Adejiola Odelola, held in Modakeke on Saturday, Oba Toriola, commended the children of the deceased for approaching life after the death of their father with the deserved seriousness.
According to him, the late Odelola was not materialistic but worked hard for the political emancipation of his town and called on the youth in the community to emulate the virtues of hardwork and dedication of the former lawmaker.
He described the late Odelola as an intelligent and committed Modakeke indigene and prayed for the happy repose of his soul.
The monarch further said, “Children of the late Odelola didn’t look at the circumstances surrounding his death. Rather than looking at that, they faced their work. They read widely and God blessed them. We are all proud of them and their achievements. We should all aim to leave good legacies for the younger generation to follow.”
Delivering a paper at the event, an Osogbo-based legal practitioner, Mr. Olukorede Obaditan, urged Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of giving to the less privileged, as doing so would enhance the peace of society.
He said, “Giving back makes you feel deeply rewarding at heart. Millions of people have a habit of constantly giving to society to support causes that they believe in.
“Giving back or donating to the causes that you care, about benefits not only the charity but also benefits you. According to research conducted by the National Institute of Health, people who donated a minimum amount on a monthly basis have activated pleasure centres in the brain.
“This experiment has been entirely scientific and controlled, but the results proved that donating money can make a human feel better. It can bring meaning to your life: By donating or giving back you are creating opportunities to meet people who believe in the same causes as you do.
“The interaction with like-minded people can inspire you to create a real impact on these causes. It can also infuse your life with a purpose or meaning in case you are stuck in a rut wondering why life is so stagnant.”
