The Senate of Maryland, US has honoured the Eleanor Roosevelt boys’ University basketball team for winning the 2022 basketball championship for the State of Maryland.
Roosevelt outlasted Churchill, 54-49, in double overtime in the Maryland 4A title game on March 12, 2022, bringing their state championship haul to five in 15 years. The Raiders last won the 4A title in 2019.
The winning team include 18-year-old Nigerian, Prince Raphael Akinyemi who is  the son of the Eselu of Iseluland in Yewa-North local government area of Ogun State, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi.
The son of the first class king played important roles in securing 54-49 victory for the Raiders. According to his father, the Iselu-born teenager relocated to the US at the age of seven alongside his siblings.
Speaking on the historic feat, Oba Akinyemi said nobody could have believed that an indigene from Iselu in Yewa North Local Government would be standing for an honour at a US State Senate, declaring that “this is a testimony that the nation has many talents and potentials lurked in the rural areas.”
He added that: “I feel great and fulfilled that good things can come out from my community. Most especially, for my son to be honoured in the US State Parliament with all senators seated.
“Even, the Senate president clapped for them all for winning the basketball championship.”
He, however, charged the government to create an enabling environment for the younger generation to thrive, adding that ” I will not object to my son playing for Nigeria’s basketball team if the need arises.”
